Pacific Regional Oceanscape Project (PROP)

This project was to implement the Reimaanlok process on Ajeltake Village, Majuro Atoll.

Pacific Islands Forest Restoration Initiative

A tree replanting initiative in close partnership with the Ajeltake Community Development Association (ACDA) and the Agriculture Division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Commerce to replant 2000 native trees targeting food security, coastal protection and medicinal purposes.

The team has already distributed the necessary tools to prepare each seedling, which will be purchased from people in Ajeltake, Woja and Laura Villages, Targeted local trees includes different species of “ma” (breadfruit), “bob”(pandanus), trees that promote coastal reinforcement (“kunnat”, “kidren” and “utilomar”) and medicinal trees (“kartep”, “kaanol”, “ekkun”

This project incentives the community to ensure the survival of each tree in which MICS will be closely monitoring in the next two years.

The Nature Conservancy -

For assistance in designing the Ajeltake Resource Management Plan by incorporating integrated resource management tools for the optimization of the Reimaanlok Process’ marine spatial planning.

By using the guide to designing locally managed areas (LMA’s), the AJeltake community can further provide their input to the management plan through:

1) Understanding of key ecological and social factors that contribute to healthy and abundant resources;

2) Incorporating the latest science-based recommendations for managing resources so they are healthy, abundant, and resilient; and

3) Developing zones and rules for LMAs that will help to build long-term healthy, abundant, and resilient coastal and marine resources.
